Generative Lexicon Approach to Derived Inchoative Verbs in Korean

چکیده
Since Vendler (1967), the event structure and the verbal aspect have been one of the controversial issues in verbal semantics. These issues result from the fact that all the verbs, which belong to each aspectual class, do not behave in the same way within each class. Among four aspectual classes suggested by Vendler (1967), achievement verbs show various behaviors and the subclasses of achievement verbs can be classified according to several patterns based on the similarity and difference between the various behaviors of achievement verbs. As some semanticists have suggested, some of them are called degree achievement. In particular, we can observe the pattern of the change, which the verbal events show, because achievement and accomplishment events involve the changing event and their core events are also changes. According to Smith (1999), telicity is the important property for characterizing achievement and accomplishment situations and differentiating them from state and activity situations. A telic event implicates the heterogeneity and the complex event. This indicates that a telic event should denote the changing event. Therefore, exploiting the verbal semantics in terms of the changing event is one way of solving the long-discussed but unsolved problems related to Vendler’s aspectual classes in Lexical Semantics.

Morphological Passivization and the Change of Lexical-Semantic Structures in Korean
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the lexical-semantic structure of morphologically derived passive verbs in Korean based on Pustejovsky (1995)'s Generative Lexicon Theory (GL) and to explain the change of the root verb's lexical-semantic structure by means of passivization. Passivization in this paper is defined as the unaccusaztivization. In Argument Structure of derived passive verbs, ...
متن کاملOpacity in the lexicon: a generative lexicon approach to Korean VV compounds
is paper aims at providing a formal description of three types of Korean compounds made up of two verbs (VV compounds) in the Generative Lexicon framework. I will rst discuss several properties commonly ascribed to VV compounds and address the problem of identifying lexical VV compounds as opposed to SVCs and similar constructions. I will then argue that the complex semantic structure and the ...
متن کاملYet Another Piece of Evidence for the Common Base Approach to Japanese Causative/Inchoative Alternations
This paper presents yet another argument for the view that both the causative and inchoative verbs in the Japanese causative alternation are syntactically equally complex, derived independently from common bases. While morphological considerations alone suggest that such an approach must be taken to account for cases involving equipollent alternations, which have overt morphemes for both the ca...
متن کاملThe role of Persian causative markers in the acquisition of English causative verbs
This project investigates the relationship between lexical semantics and causative morphology in the acquisition of causative/inchoative-related verbs in English as a foreign language by Iranian speakers. Results of translation and picture judgment task show although L2 learners have largely acquired the correct lexico-syntactic classification of verbs in English, they were constrained by ...
متن کاملEvent Types in the Generative Lexicon Implications for Persian Compound Verbs
Compounding is a highly productive phenomenon in Persian and compound verbs have been the subject of several interesting studies in a variety of frameworks. In this paper, I look at a small subset of these verbs and try to capture some of the constraints and generalities involved in the compounding process. The theoretical framework of the paper is the Generative Lexicon (GL) as formalized in P...
